Winning Formula
Good news and bad news on the food
front this week for the
little man. Jasper has had his first experience of solid food; and we
have
discovered that keeping him fed from now on will be a lot more
challenging.
Our visitors are better informed than us. Ulli, my sister-in-law, pointed out that genetically modified (GMO) foods are illegal in the EU, but not here in Canada. Sure enough, our brand of formula is on the Greenpeace ‘red list’ of foods which are know to contain GMO materials.
My feelings are mixed on this subject. I am a naturally casual person who tends not to worry about things that might never happen. However, I have to respect Carolina’s wishes on this subject.
Jasper, having no choice whatsoever about what he eats, should be allowed to make up his own mind later in life (we have the same attitude about religion). For now, we would rather he did not eat GMO foods until there is more data available.
And there’s the problem. Quotes on the Greenpeace website from experts were far from convincing. But let’s say for now that I am convinced. What’s our alternative? Not one infant formula is on the green list of safe foods. Jasper cannot be allowed to starve!
We will be looking for alternative products this week, but in the meantime, there is good news on the food front, as JD tried his first few mouthfuls of infant cereal. In all honesty it’s more liquid than solid, but he lapped it up like a cat in the cream, sparing no opportunity to spit it over any nearby porous surfaces.
There’s so much to worry about these days that mums and dads could be forgiven for forgetting to enjoy the great moments. We’ll do our best to be strong guardians and happy parents at the same time. Sleep well.
